The Pediatric Medical Unit (PMU) project makes pediatric medical expertise available to State and Federal adjudicators to assist them with developing and reviewing Supplemental Security Income (SSI) child disability cases.
What States/Locations are involved?
SSA is currently testing the PMU intiative in one site:
- Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities (Memphis, Tennessee)
How does it work?
When a Disability Examiner receives a childhood disability application which is difficult to determine, the doctors and specialists within the PMU may be consulted for recommended consultative exams, the PMU may conduct the consultative exams, and they may provide a case assessment that will review the child’s functional capacity after considering the impact of individual impairments as well as the impact of the combined impairments.
What are SSA's Expectations?
The PMUs will provide a service to DDSs by providing expert information on impairments, functional limitations, and providing a means to acquiring the documentation necessary to make eligibility determinations as early in the adjudication process as possible.
