On 10/1/2000, a new law extended Medicare (premium-free hospital insurance) coverage for people who receive Social Security Disability benefits and work.

This is an additional 4 and 1/2 years.

Medicare will continue at least 93 months (7 yrs. and 9 mos.) after the trial work period (TWP) ends. (Total of at least 8 and 1/2 years including the TWP months).

How Can I Get This New Extended Medicare Coverage ?


This new law applies to you if you are:
  • just starting to work, or
  • in a trial work period now, or
  • in an Extended Period of Eligibility (36 month-reinstatement period) that does not end prior to 6/1/2000, or
  • Medicare (free Hospital Insurance is not due to terminate until after 9/30/2000.
