| Agency Scorecard | 2010 OMB Scorecard on Sustainability and Energy Social Security is proud to present our Office of Management and Budget Scorecard on Sustainability and Energy. We have a responsibility to the public to conduct business in an efficient, economical, and environmentally sound manner. For years, we have implemented projects benefitting the environment: we recycle; purchase environmentally friendly products; use energy efficient lighting, electronics, and appliances; and power our vehicles with alternative fuels. We also build or renovate our facilities in accordance with environmentally sustainable strategies. Using the green solutions in our daily operations is a sound environmental stewardship decision that we will continue to embrace. We will also continue to lead by example in advancing these energy and environmental practices. As you review our scorecard, we want to provide the attached questions and answers to clarify the scoring. Question: Why did we receive a red score for reduction of energy intensity? Answer: Our score on energy intensity reduction uses fiscal year 2003 as a baseline year. We completed numerous energy conservation measures prior to the baseline year that makes it difficult to improve our energy intensity score. We continue to evaluate our energy use and to implement new energy conservation measures as practical. Question: Why did we receive a yellow score for the purchase of renewable energy? Answer: We purchase renewable energy for the majority of our facilities but are unable to purchase renewable energy for our facility in California beyond direct purchases by the power supplier. We plan to increase purchases of renewable energy in other areas of the country to offset our inability to purchase in California. Question: Why did we receive a red score for reduction of water intensity? Answer: It is important to note that we are the lowest water user per gross square feet of all Federal agencies. We completed numerous water reduction strategies prior to the 2007 baseline year so it is difficult to improve water use. We will continue to pursue water conservation opportunities as practical. |
