An appointed representative is someone recognized by Social Security (SSA) as a representative, who can assist individuals with their case or appeal and act upon their behalf.
If you decide to have a representative, you must sign and submit a written statement to us appointing him or her to represent you in your dealings with Social Security. You may use form
SSA-1696 (Appointment of Representative) and submit it to SSA.Friends, family members, and others can help you with your appeal. However, if they are not your appointed representative, the answer to this question should be "no."
