Congress Passes S. 1614,
the Accuracy for Adoptees Act
On December 23, 2013, the House passed S. 1614, the Accuracy for Adoptees Act, without objection. On December 20, 2013, the Senate passed the bill without amendment by unanimous consent. The bill now moves to the President for his signature.
Following are provisions of interest to SSA:
- Would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to require Federal agencies to recognize State name and date of birth determinations—as established on State court orders, birth certificates, certificates of foreign birth, certificates of birth abroad, or other similar State vital records documents issued by the adopted child's U.S. State of residence—as evidence of name and date of birth changes when issuing Certificates of Citizenship and other Federal documents.
- Would be effective upon enactment.
