Philadelphia Celebrates Hundreds Of 100-Years-Young Residents
The City of Philadelphia and Mayor Michael Nutter paid tribute to Philadelphia residents aged 100 years or older at the 11th Annual Mayor’s Centenarian Celebration. The event brought the city’s Centenarians together with friends and family to enjoy lunch, music, singing and dancing.
“For over a century, our centenarians have been the backbone of our communities, representing a living link from our past to our present,” said Mayor Nutter. “They have worked and raised families in Philadelphia. They have witnessed history as life in the city has progressed from cobblestone streets to skyscrapers. We are privileged to honor these distinguished Philadelphians and the wealth of knowledge about our city that they share with us.”
With the cooperation of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Philadelphia Region, invitations from the Mayor were sent to over 450 Philadelphia centenarians. Paula Newcomer, Deputy Regional Commissioner for SSA’s Philadelphia Region, shared in the cake cutting with Mayor Nutter and the oldest female and male Centenarians.
