Claims Representative

A claims representative assists the public in person or by telephone in establishing entitlement to Social Security benefits. Your contacts will allow you to obtain, clarify and verify information to analyze claims and make decisions regarding entitlement to benefits. You will work in one of the 160 field offices spread throughout our region. 

Since our public speaks many languages, bilingual ability is highly desirable. So is the ability to communicate with deaf or hearing-impaired individuals using signed English or American Sign Language. Depending upon your qualifications, you may enter this position at the GS-5 or GS-7 grade level. With good performance, you will be promoted to subsequent grade levels until you reach the highest grade in this position, GS-11. Career advancement from this position is usually to technical assistant or supervisory positions.   Link to General Schedule salaries and wages. 

Claims Authorizer

The claims authorizer position is very similar to the claims representative position. The work involves some telephone contact with the public to make decisions regarding entitlement to benefits. You will work in one of our six Program Service Centers (PSCs) located throughout the country. The PSC in this region is in Richmond, California about 20 miles from San Francisco. Depending upon your qualifications, you may enter this position at the GS-5 or GS-7 grade level. With good performance, you will be promoted to subsequent grade levels until you reach the highest grade in this position, GS-11.   Link to General Schedule salaries and wages.

Service Representative

A service representative provides assistance to the public. You will answer a wide variety of questions about Social Security programs, interview people seeking benefits, investigate their situations, and resolve problems. You will work in one of the 160 field offices spread throughout our region.

Depending on your qualifications you may enter this position at the GS-4 or GS-5 level with progression, based on good performance, to the GS-8 level. Teleservice Representative

Telephone service representatives are located at a number of teleservice centers across the country and work with the public by telephone. You will answer questions regarding eligibility for benefits and SSA's programs. Bilingual ability is highly desirable for teleservice representatives. Entry into this position is at the GS-4 or GS-5 level with progression, based on good performance, to the GS-8 level. Benefit Authorizer

Benefit authorizers are responsible for updating beneficiary records, making sure payment is made to the beneficiary, and preparing correspondence to the beneficiaries regarding their benefits. Most changes made in a case after the original determination are made by benefit authorizers. You will have contact with the public by telephone. You will work in one of our six Program Service Centers (PSCs) located throughout the country. The PSC in this region is in Richmond, California about 20 miles from San Francisco.

Legal Positions

Assistant Regional Counsel, Office of the Regional Chief Counsel, Office of the General Counsel

The Office of the General Counsel advises SSA management on a variety of disability, personnel, labor, and business law issues. Opportunity exists to represent SSA in litigation before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, federal district courts, the Merit Systems Protection Board, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. GS level varies from GS-9 through GS 14. Link to General Schedule salaries and wages.


Staff Attorney, Office of Hearings and Appeals (OHA)

People who are denied Social Security benefits and disagree with the Agency's decision may appeal through the Office of Hearings and Appeals. Staff attorneys, working in hearing offices throughout the country, provide professional legal assistance to administrative law judges. Most of the staff attorneys' time is spent writing decisions on disability cases. In these challenging positions, staff attorneys assist in pre-hearing legal preparation, research, decision preparation and other post hearing actions. This position starts at the GS-9 entry level. Disability Medical Consultant
California Disability Determination Service

Medical Consultants are psychiatric and physical medicine professionals who review and interpret medical and other evidence submitted by physicians and other sources to assist in determining an applicant’s eligibility for disability benefits.  Applicants for disability include both adults and children. Work is performed under general direction and supervision in California Department of Social Services Disability Determination Service Division Branch Offices, and on the job training is provided.  Offices are located in Covina, Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Roseville, Sacramento, San Diego and Stockton.
 
Interested applicants must meet California medical license and certificate requirements.  Fulltime salary ranges can start at $8,711 to $9,398 per month depending on experience and credentials.  Full job descriptions and application instructions are posted at the following web links:
