Disability Evaluation Under Social Security

Disability Evaluation Under Social Security provides physicians and other health professionals with an introduction to the disability programs administered by the Social Security Administration.

General Information describes our programs, the disability determination process, and the role of health care professionals in the process.

Evidentiary Requirements explains the information that medical sources can furnish to help ensure sound and prompt determinations and decisions on disability claims.

Listing of Impairments (Overview) introduces Parts A and B of the Listing of Impairments, which contain medical criteria that are usually sufficient to establish disability.  Parts A and B of the Listing of Impairments appear in appendix 1 to subpart P of part 404 of the Code of Federal Regulations, but we also provide them here.  See Adult Listings (Part A) and Childhood Listings (Part B).

Revisions to Rules Regarding the Evaluation of Medical Evidence provides resources to help understand our rules that became effective on March 27, 2017, related to medical sources and medical evidence.
