House Ways and Means Committee Passes H.R. 3667, the
the “Social Security Child Protection Act of 2023”
On June 7, 2023, the House Committee on Ways and Means voted 43-0 to favorably report H.R. 3667, the Social Security Child Protection Act of 2023 to the full House.
Introduced by Representatives Brad Wenstrup (OH) and Earl Blumenauer (OR) on May 25, 2023, H.R. 3667, as amended by the Committee, would:
- require SSA to issue a new, different SSN to an individual under age 14 when in the course of transmission of the SSN card to the child (i.e., in the mail), the confidentiality of the number is compromised by reason of theft or loss of the SSN card;
- require such evidence in these situations as the Commissioner may need; and
- be effective 180 days after enactment.
