The Ways and Means Committee Favorably Reports H.R. 5306, the “Know Your Social Security Act of 2019”
On December 11, 2019, the House Committee on Ways and Means favorably reported H.R. 5306, the Know Your Social Security Act of 2019, unanimously with amendment. The bill now awaits consideration by the House of Representatives.
As amended, H.R. 5306 would:
- require SSA to provide a Social Security Statement by mail every year to all eligible individuals (i.e., any individual 25 or older who has an SSN and earnings or self-employment, does not receive benefits, and for whom we have a current mailing address). SSA would not be required to mail a Statement for a year to any eligible individual who, in response to an SSA inquiry regarding the mailing, elects not to receive a mailed Statement for the year.
- be effective with respect to Statements required to be provided after the date of enactment.
