Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Ask your spouse to create or open their my Social Security account, go to the ‘Retirement Calculator’ section, and note their monthly benefit estimate at the Full Retirement Age.
  2. Create or open your personal my Social Security account, scroll to the ‘Retirement Calculator’ section, and:
    1. Select ‘Calculate a Benefit as a Spouse’ if you are not eligible for retirement benefits yourself, or select the ‘Compare with Benefit as a Spouse’ tab if you are eligible for retirement benefits.
    2. Choose a future age or date when you would like to start receiving spouse’s benefits.
    3. Enter your spouse’s retirement benefit estimate at their Full Retirement Age.
  3. If you are eligible for retirement benefits, you can also scroll to the bottom of the screen to estimate the potential benefits your spouse could receive based on your earnings history by selecting ‘Calculate a benefit for a current or former spouse’ and entering their date of birth, and age when they would elect to begin receiving benefits.
