Ways to Attend Your Social Security Hearing Before a Judge
Your hearing with an administrative law judge (ALJ) can take place in one of four ways:
- in person at one of our offices;
- by audio using a telephone in a private location you choose;
- by agency video using our video equipment at one of our offices; or
- by online video using a personal electronic device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer with an internet connection, in a private location you choose.
This website explains what to expect with each manner of appearance, and how to let us know whether you accept or object to certain hearing types.
After you submit your Request for Hearing, we will send you a document titled “Notice of Ways to Attend a Hearing”, which provides information about how you can appear at a hearing before a judge. This notice includes two related forms:
- Objection to Appearing by Audio or Agency Video (submit only if you object to having your hearing by audio/telephone, agency video, or both)
- Agreement to Appearing by Online Video (submit only if you agree to appear at your hearing by online video)
